It was the ultimate home gaming device of the early Eighties. Atari's 2600 console was the last word in cool, with its plug-in game cartridges, sturdy joysticks and non-stop action. And it's back! The Atari Plug & Play TV Games unit features ten of the finest titles from the old 2600 in all their full-colour glory, and you can pick up the entire package for less than the a single Atari cartridge cost 25 years ago. What a bargain!
Plugs straight into your TV, no Atari 2600 required!
You don't need an Atari 2600 to play Atari Plug & Play TV Games – the unit is completely self-contained, and connects straight into your TV or video recorder's phono sockets. The games are built into the controller, which is based on an Atari joystick of old. If you've been around long enough to remember the original, it will certainly bring back a few memories, and for the youngsters, it's a thrilling look at the dawn of home gaming. But what about the games? Read on…
• Breakout
12 Game Modes
A brick wall appears at the top of the screen, and you must knock it down one brick at a time! Move your bar left and right with the joystick, sending the bouncing ball cascading up the screen into the bricks, taking them out as it hits. Don't miss – lose five balls and it's ‘game over'…
• Asteroids
66 Game Modes
Your spaceship is trapped in a deadly asteroid field. To survive you must blast the huge space boulders into ever-smaller pieces, finally shattering them into gravel and clearing the screen. If you're in a tricky spot you can escape through hyperspace, but be warned – you might be beaming straight into trouble.
• Gravitar
Five Game Levels
The evil Gravitar seeks to destroy the universe by bombarding unsuspecting galaxies with hostile gravitational forces. He's installed a powerful reactor creating a killer sun that destroys all life on nearby planets. And only you can stop him! OK, it's a silly plot that barely makes sense, but the game's a scorcher. Classic shoot-‘em-up action at its best…
• Real Sports Volleyball
Two Game Modes
The roots of console beach volleyball is here, folks. It's classic two-on-two action, with teams lifting the ball into the air and smashing it over the net into their opponents' court. It may lack the sophistication and graphical excellence of Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball, but it's excellent fun, and that's what counts!
• Pong
Two Game Modes
This is the game that brought videogaming to the masses. Played like a tennis match viewed from above, Pong sees you control a stick-like bat, moving it up and down to intercept the ball. The first player to score 21 points by forcing his opponent to miss wins.
• Yar's Revenge
Eight Game Modes
The mighty, yet peaceful, Yars are the descendants of the Earth's common housefly. Using their powers to thrive on planets III, IV and V in the Razak solar system, they're attacked without warning by the ruthless Qotile. As an expert warrior, can you protect the Yars' homeland and repel the invasion? Another classic shooter, and one of the most popular Atari cartridges of all time.
• Circus Atari
Eight Game Modes
It's a simple idea - pop the red, white and blue balloons drifting overhead to score points. But how do you burst them? Simple – catch a falling clown on the empty end of your movable see-saw device, sending the clown on the other end up into the air. As he falls, make sure he again lands on the empty side of the see-saw, catapulting his partner into the skies once more.
• Missile Command
34 Game Levels
Is this the ultimate Atari game? A conversion of the arcade title, Missile Command has you defending your cities from falling bombs which leave a trail in their wake. Aim your crosshairs in front of the falling missiles, and press ‘fire' to set off an explosive blast – if the enemy missile is caught in its blast, it's destroyed. If not, it might just land on your cities…
• Adventure
Three Skill Levels
A change of pace for this one. An evil magician has stolen an Enchanted Chalice and, somewhat inevitably, it's up to you to get it back. Explore the rooms and dungeons of the Golden Castle as you pick up clues and use objects to further your quest…
• Centipede
Two Game Modes
Another classic. A slithering centipede descends from the top of the screen, and it's up to you to take it out, segment by segment. Hit it in the middle and it splits into two, so be careful where you place your shots. Watch out for the spiders too…
