An wireless IP camera is a video camera that can be accessed over a network or even over the internet, allowing its images and audio to be viewed, heard and controlled remotely, even from the other side of the world.

Once configured correctly you can connect to your wifi ip camera from anywhere including work, home, a laptop or even an Internet Café. This amazing connectivity means that as long as you can get to an Internet enabled PC you can view and control your camera, ensuring total peace of mind wherever you are.

Recording video

Using the included software, you can configure a PC to record footage captured by the ip camera, either continuously or only when movement is detected allowing you to use the camera as an effective security camera (CCTV). Alternatively, you can monitor the ip camera through a web browser an actually record the video and audio from the camera in real-time through the browser, allowing you to record on demand if you see something that requires attention.

Controlling the ip camera

The video camera itself is mounted on an articulated gimbal. Its pan, tilt and zoom capability mean that you can either set it to monitor an entire room automatically (scanning the room entirely by panning and tilting) or you can connect to it and take control, identifying and zooming in on any area of the room.

The pan, tilt and zoom capability allows you to see events in close-up detail, perfect for monitoring a wide range of situations where a fixed camera would struggle such as a number of cash tills in a bar, or different parts of a large garden.

Receive alerts by email

Another impressive feature of the camera is that it can be configured to automatically send you an alert email as soon as it detects motion in its field of view. Should you choose to, you can then log into the camera and view what is happening in real time.

Installing and configuring the camera

The camera can be mounted either conventionally, such as on a desktop/shelf or ceiling mounted using the included mounting bracket. The camera has both wired and wireless LAN connectivity meaning it can connect to your router either via Ethernet cable or over WiFi making positioning very flexible.

To access the camera over your local network is then simply a case of entering the camera's IP address (assigned by your router) into a web browser (Internet Explorer is recommended). From there you can view, pan, tilt, zoom and record.

To make the camera accessible over the internet you will need either a fixed IP address (provided for free by many ISPs) or use a free dynamic DNS service like DynDNS.com. In addition, you will need to configure port forwarding on your router (which will be explained in your router's manual). Once complete, you can access the camera from anywhere in the world, including taking full control of its pan, tilt and zoom just as if you were on a local network.
